Shatavari Root (Asparagus racemosus) is known as a rasayana in the Ayurvedic tradition and is also known as the “Queen of the herbs”. It is an herb for longevity, helping with health imbalances, building strength, increasing memory, strengthening the vital force, and maintaining youthfulness. It is translated from Sanskrit (which is the sacred language of Hinduism) as “She who has hundreds of husbands”. It is widely used as a women’s reproductive and sexual tonic herb.

Shatavari grows in tropical areas of Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Asia, Australia, and Africa. It is a ground cover at low altitudes with rich sandy soil. It can be grown in colder climates, but the tubers need to come in during the colder months and then are best grown in greenhouse conditions.

Shatavari is considered phytoestrogenic and is used for a wide range of hormonal health in both men and women. It supports fertility, helps motility of sperm through vaginal fluids, breastfeeding by increasing milk supply and quality of milk, fetal development, threats of miscarriages as the isolated constituent shatavarin interferes with oxytocin blocking its ability to contract the uterine muscle cells preventing premature contractions, regulates menstrual cycle and menopause, helps with low libido, low sperm count, and more. Our primary focus in this article is the benefits during perimenopause and menopause.

Shatavari has traditionally been used in menopause as a cooling and moistening adaptogen which makes it good for hot flashes and dryness – such as vaginal dryness. I have also seen improvement with dry eyes as well - which can sometimes be a problem in menopause.A study from India showed that Shatavari can increase vaginal lubrication, raise libido, help with sleep and lower anxiety and depression. If you are sleeping better, less anxious, have more energy, and have less pain during intercourse, I can definitely see why it would help with sex drive.

Shatavari is deeply rejuvenating and nourishing. Helps to balance hormones and nourish our tissues. Helps with vaginal dryness by restoring elasticity and lubrication, which in the long term helps lessen atrophy of the tissue. Its cooling effects help with hot flashes which in turn help with sleep. It also has a calming effect on the nervous system which can play an important role in our moods and sleep patterns.

Shatavari also protects the gastrointestinal lining, gut motility, and helps where there is inflammation and irritation. It supports healthy mucosa which makes it helpful for things like acid reflux and gastritis. It helps with the prevention of kidney stones as it can inhibit crystallization of minerals. It has neuroprotective properties possibly making it helpful for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Shatavari is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and is considered an immunomodulator. Some women can see an increase in these symptoms when entering menopause because of the loss of estrogen, so using herbs like shatavari can sometimes help minimize those effects.

Shatavari is best used in tincture and powdered form. I have also seen it beneficial in pill form depending on the strength and maker. It should be avoided during pregnancy unless you are working directly with a doctor, midwife, or herbalist who is familiar with the herb. It can be used while breastfeeding. If looking to use shatavari for medicinal purposes I would suggest working with your doctor or herbalist.

This is a dietary supplement.

I recommend that with all the herbal tinctures you start of small in dosing and work your way up to recommended dosage. Some people only need a small amount to notice a difference.
