Kudzu Root (Pueraria Montana) is native to India, East Asia, China and Japan. It grows abundantly there in subtropical and temperate climates. It thrives on hillsides, in sunny locations, and woodlands. It was introduced to the US in the 19th century and now is prolific in the Carolina’s, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee. It is considered an extremely invasive plant with an aggressive growth rate and there are absolutely no concerns about over-harvesting. It was grown for agriculture purposes to stabilize eroding soils and known to enhance soil fertility. In Asia it is used as a nutritious food and historically has been valuable during times of scarcity or famine. It gets processed into porridge, pasta, and jellies.
Kudzu supports many categories of menopause complaints, including vaginal symptoms (reduces atrophy, dryness, soreness, helps with elasticity and PH), libido issues, bone density, brain health, and cardiovascular health. It is recommended to take kudzu for at least 6 months to see results and effects only last while using the herb. Kudzu’s active constituents, namely puerarin, help promote hydration and reduce inflammation in the body. It works to generate moisture and cools the body. Kudzu’s phytoestrogenic properties potentially help with reducing bone loss because the compound daidzein mimics estrogen in the body.
Kudzu root may lower the risk of heart disease, hypertension, and stroke by protecting cellular structures and reducing oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA. Some women can see an increase in these symptoms when entering menopause because of the loss of estrogen.
