Maca (Lepidium meyenii or Lepidium peruvianum) comes to us from South America, mostly Peru, where it is cultivated and grown in the highlands. It is in the brassica family and grows similar to that of a radish with colors like red, yellow and black. It has been used traditionally as a food crop in Peru, but it has become increasingly difficult for those folks to get it because the prices have skyrocketed - as the demand has increased throughout the rest of the world. It started circulating into other countries back in the ‘80s and is considered a “superfood”. It was said that maca seeds were smuggled out of Peru and into China at some point. (It is illegal to transport seeds or whole roots out of Peru.) China has been growing black maca in the Yunnan Province - as the weather is like that of Peru. My research has suggested that maca coming out of China could be adulterated, so make sure you are buying Peruvian maca only. Red maca seems to be pricier than that of the yellow and white maca which are used pretty interchangeably.

Maca was traditionally dried or roasted to make it more digestible. Many of the roots were dried after harvest so they could be stored for later use. They were made into fermented beverages known as maca chicha and porridge called mazamorra. Raw maca would cause upset stomachs. Nowadays Maca is gelatinized for commercial production, which is supposed to break down the starches which makes it more digestible.

Maca is considered an adaptogen and has an affinity for the female reproductive tract. It is used for hormone regulation. It contains isoflavones which means it has the ability to bind with estrogen receptors so it can help with estrogen levels. Maca has been shown to help with all types of menopausal complaints from hot flashes to energy levels, sleep, mood, cognitive function, brain fog, vaginal dryness and low libido for both men and women.  It has been shown to help with vaginal discomfort, less dryness, less pain, and more interest in sex and an easier time reaching orgasm. It may also be helpful in cases of infertility and low sperm count in men. It has a normalizing and regulating effect on cortisol levels which is good for depression and anxiety. It may be able to help with diastolic blood pressure, and it has been shown to help regulate one’s appetite by decreasing food cravings.

Maca is considered a nutrient dense food. It is high in protein and contains amino acids. It is also rich in minerals like iron, calcium, copper, zinc, and potassium. Maca is not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding but could be used while trying to get pregnant. It can be added to smoothies or drinks. I have personally been using maca and have found it to be quite helpful with menopause symptoms.

Dosage varies for maca but everything I have been taught says 2-3 grams daily of powdered maca root. I take ¼ teaspoon and found that to be enough. I like to mix it with my collagen and mushroom powders. On very rare occasions maca can be stimulating for some folks and disrupt their sleep. I recommend using maca in the morning for that reason.

This is a dietary supplement.

I recommend that with all the herbal tinctures you start of small in dosing and work your way up to recommended dosage. Some people only need a small amount to notice a difference.
